Information for Newbies

Some little information for newbs like me to help deciding which weapons and armor they choose to buy (if you’re also overwhelmed by hundrets of different materials and can’t decide which is better/worse) or which horse to tame.

Weapons

Blade and handle.
As far as I know blade affects dmg and handle affects the dmg absorbation when you block.
During beta there was rumour that the weight proportion between the blade and the handle would also boost the dmg- a heavy blade and light handle would do more dmg vs armour.

Anywyas as for materials:

Blades from weak to stronger:
- wood blades /the strongest would be ironwood here IMO/
- bone blades /the strongest would be molarium AFAIK/
- metal blades /from pig iron to steel/
- alloy blades /thungsteel and the such/

Handle is mostly made of wood or bone. Wood handles are lighter but give less durability to the weapon. Bone handles are a bit more heavy /take more stamina per swing/ but give better durability.

There is no best weapon. Its all about finding a good combination that best suits your char.

Horses

Donkeys
The slowest mount which requires 30 taming. Only for beginners in taming and below all horses. One spot to find them is to head north from Meduli. If you go just to the right of the ruins you will find cougars. Go past the mountain behind the cougars, past the brownwood tree, and head down towards Tindrem and donkeys will be there.

Mongrel Horses
The first speed horse requires 40 taming. It moves at a decent rate but it’s speed and stamina are below all other horses. They can be found all over Nave. One spot is east of Meduli past the priest by the broken down barn in the brownwood forest.

Jotun Horses
The highest stamina horse with a slower speed than most. It requires 50 taming and can be found east of Campus Cave past the river on the mountain.

Steppe Horses
One of the fastest horses with reasonable stamina. They require 60 taming and can be found throughout Nave. One spot specifically is directly south from Morin Khur aross the river with the player made bridge where the Wisents are. The horses are just past the Wisents.

Desert Horses
The fastest horse in the game with high stamina. They also have the fastest stamina regain especially when off of the horse. They require 70 taming and can only be found in the desert by Meduli. Specifically two spawns can be found south of Meduli one right before the enterance to the forest where Terrorbirds can be found and the other in a valley along the coastline past the large waterfall.

Bull Horses
The highest health horse in the game with slow speed. They require 80 taming and are the only mounts that can be ridden with plate armor (if not in yet – soon to come). They also do a large amount of damage and can be found in the Risar camp on the way to Gaul Kor. Specifically, to get there, after coming through the bull tunnel heading straight over the mountain and taking a right into the camp which is marked by wooden log walls.

Warrior Build

Since I just left game when I spoke to a book vendor (see screenshot above), I’ve decided to write another article on my new Mortal Blog.

My first warrior build goes like this

Attributes:

  • 23 y/o Thursar/Khurite
  • 110 str
  • 104 dext
  • 116 const
  • 51 psyche
  • 10 int
  • 190 size

Skills:

  • 90+10 sword
  • 89+11 aggressive stance
  • 89+11 endurance
  • 99+1 anatomy
  • 89+11 survival
  • 89+11 riding
  • 89+11 mounted combat
  • 90+10 agility
  • 98+2 taming
  • 88+2 creature control
  • 90+10 combat maneuvering

I am done with attributes stuff. One or two skills are already maxxed, rest is about the half.

Still figuring out what “class” my alt characters will get. I’m thinking about some archery/thievery stuff, but unfortunately, thievery still ain’t in game yet. They removed it through open beta process because it was quite unbalanced and didn’t put it in yet.

On top of that, I’m currently figuring out different weapons and armor stuff. Way to much for my opinion. I’d appreciate systems like cloth-leather-chain-plate more than several different ores and different armor for each leather type. Still getting confused when I want to buy armor sets. But well, I guess it makes crafting more complex though, which is good.

P.S.: To fanboys: My making fun of bugs and stuff doesn’t mean I don’t like the game or want to make it bad. I just want to show an uncensored view on the game on my blog and currently.. well.. it’s buggy you can’t deny that.

Mortal moved to own blog

Because I wanted to test WordPress 3 MultiBlog feature as well as I was getting sick of the bunch of Mortal articles in my main blog, I decided to move Mortal stuff to it’s own blog. Have fun.

Next patch inc.

Yesterday, StarVault released another bigger bugfix patch for Mortal. More stuff is getting fixed. Game is more and more playable. Every patch until now mainly adressed inventory stuff. Unfortunately, inventory is still glitchy. But you can see the developer is really hard working. I expect them to fix every more or less critical bug in the next few weeks. Which would be unbelievable compared to the buggy something which they released a week ago last Wednesday.

My first character is getting in it’s final form. I don’t play that much because I’m still a little bit busy in Darkfall. But leveling character is very fast. Attributes on max after one or two days, half of the skills on max after playing a week only 1-2 hours a day. Feels a little too fast (especially compared to my favorite MMO Darkfall :) ), but I guess it’s a need for leveling systems like Ultima Online (to be honest, I’ve never played UO).

Second character might get something with archery, even though I’ve read bows are extremly poor. Magic seems a little like a placeholder system because there are only 10 spells or so.

Bugs, Features, Bugs, Bugs.

Some days later. At the weekend, I didn’t really enjoyed playing Mortal. Much bugs killed almost every fun and hype I had in the beginning. Fortunately, developers released a new patch yesterday (in night! thumbs up!), which adressed a lot of bugs. Some things are really getting better. But still a lot of work to do. A very lot.

Some days later

Well, the Mortal Online release was last wednesday, how’s the server running you may ask. Unfortunately, not even half of the time. Server’s got some problems with stability. I’m quite unsure if it’s because of current after-release population which is simply more than every stresstest or if bugs or crashes are the reason. Still, a little bit frustrating to have a server crash between every hour and every 5 minutes.

First hotfix patch released directly after release. But didn’t really help for server crashes.

On top of that, the first critical bugs occured. According to forums / bugtracker, the skill system is quite buggy, meaning skill decreasings won’t work correctly, so you must stop developing your character when you’ve done with 0/1000 even though you want to unlearn starter talents.

Another thing which is very buggy is the whole inventory/bank system. According to some strange bugs explained by Christian in IRC:
http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/44857-lootbug-inventory-christian-irc.html
the whole inventory is sluggish buggy and not really usable because items keep getting invisible and stuff.

First day

And finally Mortal Online was released. The release day itself was fairly mmo-ish. Some server crashes but overall very nice start for an MMORPG.

I created some chars to save my usual character names. My first character is going to be a warrior/riding build.

Mortal Online Release

Mortal Online will be released in 3 Days. How exciting.

What do you think about it? Even though I haven’t tried Open Beta that much (stopped my Diary after two days of lagging), I am currently thinking of giving the game a try after release. Starcraft 2 Beta ends today (noooes), Darkfall Online gets a little bit boring nowadays.

Unfortunately, the game is not in a good shape yet. A lot of features are disabled right now according to the forums because they’ve changed a lot of technical stuff (graphic engine, some netcode stuff).

Are there similar sandbox-alike games out there which I haven’t tried? If so, write a comment, I might be interested. Especially if it’s like MO or DFO.

Mortal Online Release + New Trailer

StarVault just released a new trailer some days ago. Second part of the other one I mirror’ed several weeks ago.

On top of that, they’d mentioned Mortal Online will be released this month. There is still no definite date (<-lol) but they claim it will be released before March ends. I am still not that impressed by the game. Open Beta shows me there is much potential but a lot of things still “not done” and are postponed to after-release. If you can, I’ll recommend testing it before Open Beta ends. If not, I won’t buy it instantly but wait several months and try it after some content patches or something.

Btw, I’d still recommend trying Darkfall Trial für 1$/1€. I guess both, Darkfall and Mortal Online are niche mmorpgs which you most probably don’t like – still worth trying. Both.
